Creating Valentine Art Cards

Here's a super easy and fun Valentine’s Day card idea that you can create with some folded watercolor paper, watercolor paint and markers. Making your own greeting cards is actually how greeting cards first came to be; a note, showing that special someone that you appreciate them. So, let’s get to it!

What You'll Need

  • Watercolor Paint (Brilliant Red, Violet, Magenta)
  • Extra Fine Paint Markers (White and Pink)
  • Watercolor Paper
  • Double Sided Adhesive
  • Pencil
  • Scissors

Step 1: Cut the Card

You can make a simple blank greeting from a sheet of watercolor paper, a pair of scissors and some markers. Cut once vertically and fold once horizontally, making your very own blank card to create on. Now, on a slightly smaller, separate unfolded piece of watercolor paper, draw in your heart outline.

Step 2: Get Water Ready

Lightly draw out a heart using a pencil and generously wet the entire area around the heart with water. You can achieve lots of fun textures by letting water and watercolor react together.

Step 3: Add Brilliant Red

While still wet, apply little dashes of brilliant red and simply let it do its thing. The red color will automatically stop, where the water line stops around the heart.

Step 4: Add Violet

On top of that, I am adding little dashes of violet and again, I am letting it do its thing and spread on its own.

Step 5: Dry and Fill

After that is dry, (you may use a hair-dryer to speed up the process) wet the inside of the heart and add dashes of Magenta, letting it spread on its own. I like a marbled look so I am leaving some white around the edges.

Step 6: Dry

Let dry for 10 minutes or use a blow dryer to save time.

Step 7: Write a Message

When dry, I use a Red paint marker to write my message to my special someone. “You Stole My heart!”

Step 8: Get Blank Card

Now, it’s time to mount the art onto the folded greeting card. Remember, you want your greeting card to be slightly larger than your watercolor heART. A larger card creates a nice looking frame.

Step 9: Peel and Stick

Now, tape your awesome heART onto the front of the card. Here I'm using double sided adhesive tape, but you can use normal tape or glue.

Finished!

This fun and easy Valentine is only half of the magic. I need to go buy some chocolate and flowers and, I’ll be set!
